Catacombe Di Priscilla Address: Via Salaria street in Roma

Catacombe Di Priscilla, Roma
Catacombe Di Priscilla, RomaThe Catacomb of Priscilla is an archaeological site on the Via Salaria in Rome, Italy, situated in what was a quarry in Roman times. This quarry was used for Christian burials from the late 2nd century through the 4th century. This catacomb, according to tradition, is named after the wife of the Consul Manius Acilius Glabrio; he is said to have become a Christian and was killed on the orders of Domitian. Some of the walls and ceilings display fine decorations illustrating Biblical scenes. The modern entrance to the catacomb is on the Via Salaria through the cloister of the monastery of the Benedictines of Priscilla. The Catacombs of Priscilla are divided into three principal areas: an arenarium, a cryptoporticus from a large Roman villa, and the underground burial area of the ancient Roman family, the Acilius Glabrio. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c2/Orante_%28particolare%29%2C_catacombe_di_priscilla%2C_cubicolo_della_velatio%2C_roma_%28met%C3%A0_III_secolo%29.jpg/330px-Orante_%28particolare%29%2C_catacombe_di_priscilla%2C_cubicolo_della_velatio%2C_roma_%28met%C3%A0_III_secolo%29.jpg The cubicle of the Velatio The name given to this place is taken from the Latin word cubiculum, which etymologically indicates a small enclosure where one "sleeps" and which is a euphemism to refer to the dead that lie there. It was used to indicate a part of the cemetery where people from the same family were. It is called "Velatio" because of an extraordinarily well-preserved fresco in a lunette that has three scenes. Before the lunette, a compendium of the story of Jonah can be seen in the entrance arch, from the moment the whale threw him on the beach. Around the door there are also various frescoes of birds, animals and flowers. The one on the left (according to the observer's point of view) represents an elderly person, bearded and dressed in a long tunic, a cloak and a hood. He is seated. Next to him is a young woman, dressed in a yellow and decorated dalmatic. She carries a scroll in her hands. In addition, a man is seen behind who wears a white veil with red trimmings. This man is dressed in a green-blue tunic. The scene in the center represents a woman dressed in a purple tunic who is already wearing the veil and in a position of prayer. In the scene on the right, the woman appears again, this time without the veil and in a white tunic. She carries in her arms a child. The scenes are believed to be from the life of a woman buried there. The first scene would show her marriage. Then the veil would be the flameum, or veil that the woman used during the marriage, and the parchment would be the tabula nuptialis, where the legal obligations of the spouses were written. The scene on the right only indicates that she became a mother (she probably died in childbirth) The central figure represents the woman in heaven. The frescoes are dated to the second half of the 3rd century. Under the central scene there is an inscription: "BOSIVS" made in charcoal: it is Antonio Bosio, who worked during the 17th century in several Roman cemeteries. On the right wall of the cubicle there is another fresco, this time it represents the Three young men in the oven (cf. Dn 3, 15-24 and 43-50) in an attitude of prayer and wearing oriental costumes. Above them there is a dove carrying an olive branch in its beak. The wall on the left has a mutilated representation of Abraham's sacrifice (cf. Génesis 22, 9-10): Isaac appears carrying the wood for the sacrifice and Abraham with a gesture of pointing. On the ceiling, in the center, there is a fresco of the Good Shepherd with some peculiarities: it holds a kid in its left hand and with its right it points to other kids. Around it is a decoration of large bushes and birds.
