Haugesund, Haugesund Haugesund er en by og en kommune i Nord-Rogaland på vestkysten av Norge. Kommunen grenser til Tysvær kommune i øst, til Karmøy i sørvest og til Sveio i Vestland i nord. Tettstedet Haugesund hadde 45 352 innbyggere (hvorav 8 884 tilhører Karmøy) per 1. januar 2020, og er med det det 12. største tettstedet i landet. Byen fungerer som regionsenter for Haugalandet samt Sveio og Etne i Sunnhordland, et område med til sammen rundt 110 000 innbyggere. Haugesund er en by som vokste frem fra midten av 1800-tallet som følge av rike sildeforekomster i havområdene utenfor. Den fikk status som ladested i 1854 og kjøpstadrettigheter i 1866. Selv om silda etter hvert forsvant, har byen fremdeles tilknytning til maritime næringer gjennom verftsindustri og shipping. Sjøfartsdirektoratet er siden 2006 lokalisert i Haugesund. I dag er imidlertid handels- og servicenæringen dominerende, og Haugesund hadde i 2014 landets 8. største omsetningstall per innbygger innen detaljhandel (133 897 kr per innbygger).
