Fundado en 1830, es uno de los más importantes museos de historia natural de América Latina, así como uno de los más antiguos del mundo en su tipo. La misión del museo es generar conocimiento y valoración del patrimonio natural y cultural de Chile mediante experiencias memorables.[8]​ Fue el primero en ser fundado[9]​ y es el más visitado del país.[10]​ Es conocido popularmente como el «museo de la ballena», por el esqueleto de Balaenoptera borealis de su salón central.[11]​
