Sidney Sussex, Cambridge
Sidney Sussex, CambridgeSidney Sussex College (referred to informally as "Sidney") is a constituent college of the University of Cambridge in England. The College was founded in 1596 under the terms of the will of Frances Sidney, Countess of Sussex (1531–1589), wife of Thomas Radclyffe, 3rd Earl of Sussex, and named after its foundress. It was from its inception an avowedly Protestant foundation; "some good and godlie moniment for the mainteynance of good learninge". In her will, Lady Frances Sidney left the sum of £5,000 together with some plate to found a new College at Cambridge University "to be called the Lady Frances Sidney Sussex College". Her executors Sir John Harington and Henry Grey, 6th Earl of Kent, supervised by Archbishop John Whitgift, founded the College seven years after her death.Since 1596, there is a truly fascinating and entirely unexpected history to be told about Sidney Sussex College, a small institution which has always punched way above its weight and which lies at the heart of British history. Oliver Cromwell is one of the famous Sidney alumni, his head is reputed to be buried under the college’s chapel, though only those who have served as Master to the College know it’s true location. The College has produced four Nobel prize winners (the fourth highest among the Cambridge colleges) - Charles Wilson who invented the cloud chamber (Physics, 1927), Cecil Powell who was awarded Nobel prize for Photography of nuclear processes (Physics, 1950), John Walker who studied how a spinning enzyme creates the molecule that powers cells in muscles (Chemistry, 1997) and Alan McDiarmid for the discovery and development of conductive polymers (Chemistry, 2000). Sidney was integral to efforts at Bletchley Park to break the Enigma Code, thanks to Gordon Welchman and John Herivel.
